How to run iTunes on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

I managed to get Itunes 7.3.0.54 running on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron using wine 0.9.59 . First I setup Pulse Audio Server following this tutorial I found on ubuntuforums.org : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=776739 . This will take care of a bug that is responsible for Ubuntu Hardy Heron not being able to play sound simultaneously from different applications, after the installation. Itunes doesn't need a introduction.

0. Set up Pulse Audio server

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=776739

1. Install and configure Wine

sudo apt-get install wine

winecfg

Configure wine for Windows XP. Select the audio tab and select only ESounD Driver as sound driver, do a sound test (should work).

2.Install Riched30.exe

wget http://www.hexagora.com/download/support/riched30.exe

Click on the icon for wine to install it, it will be a silent installation. Browse your wine drive /home/USER_NAME/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and rename 'riched20.dll' and 'riched32.dll' to riched20.bak and riched32.bak .

3. Install iTunes and configure Quicktime

You'll find the exe-file here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/tech/?2877

Click on iTunesSetup.exe for wine to install it. You will have to click 'OK' several times. After the installation, run Quicktime (applications>wine>programs>quicktime>quicktime).
edit > preferences > quicktime preferences > advanced > video: Select 'Safe mode (GDI only)

4.Start iTunes

Shutdown all other music players and start iTunes:
applications > wine > programs > iTunes > iTunes

I'm not an expert on wine nor on Pulse Audio. It worked for me, but I do not guarantee it. Good luck.

Didnt work for me and even if you did get it to run i doubt it was stable!!??

Well, what can I say, it worked for me and iTunes is pretty stable (crashes 1 in 10 times or so)

what error did you get?

thx works nicely but does crash
btw what sidebar and dock do u use looks great thanks

dock bar = avant-window-navigator (AWN)
system stats = conky : http://sudosys.be/?q=conky

Seems to be working I followed the steps and all I saw was quicktime in the applications-wine-programs and so I went into .wine and looked for itunes.exe and it started but it's still not in the menu. It's sluggish too but thanks your awesome.

Spoke too soon. It just keeps saying connecting to apple store but it never connects.

all I can say is this:

to get itunes in your wine menu, it helps to log out and back in again

Yeahh... It works !!!!!!!!

Thank you !

itunes pops up but my ipod touch wont show up or sync or anything

Any luck with your issue? I have the app installed buy my ipod doesnt show up... rythmbox sees it and my files are there but itunes rocks. Let me know if you have any further suggestions...thx

Thank you very much! It's working perfectly on my ubuntu 8.10 ;)

Cool!

This worked for me very nicely. Not that I really want to use it...

Charlie

Paolo - does it recognize your ipod and have you been able to purchase songs, etc...?

Worked perfectly!!!

Thank you for this awesome tut, didn't want windows back cause of issues and this has now became my best friend :)

I am able to run iTune 8.1. but, it does not recognize my ipod, can you help? Also, I can not connect to apple store. Suggestions?

same here... it works, but can't access itunes store. oh well, guess i'll just have to use my hackintosh since Apple is too bullheaded make a linux port.

Honestly, this still isn't a stable solution. But it's getting a lot easier to run a virtual machine over your Ubuntu desktop - I set up a VMware 2 (which is free)/Windows XP machine on my stunningly crappy old 1.6Ghz processor/768Mb RAM machine, and it runs bearably fast, on anything reasonably up to date it'd run like the Dickens, and gives you full iTunes functionality. Two clicks and it loads. I've written a guide if it's of use to anyone: http://www.silverknife.co.uk/tech/2009/03/how-to-run-itunes-and-manage-y...

Installation failed thrice. Finally figured out that the latest version of iTunes was causing this. Browsed and downloaded iTunes 7.2 which installed and ran the first time.

It failed to detect my iPhone, though.

i really can't get this to work. im only 14. every time i run quicktime i just get the screen going blank and then i have to run the mouse over everything. im using the hp2133 mini note with ubuntu 9.04. and some of the stuff for the pulse audio server wont install. HELP!!!!!
